Breast Cancer Scanning

A report in the Lancet (16 May 2005) said that breast cancer detection rates can be doubled in young women in the ‘at risk’ group if a MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan is carried out as well as using the normal mammograms that use X-Rays.  Whilst this combined screening can detect 94% of cancers over the 40% detected by mammograms alone, it is only currently aimed at women who have a history of breast cancer in their family.  About 1% of women who are in the highest risk group for contracting breast cancer are known to have one of the two pre-disposing genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2.

However, in the report by The Guardian when explaining about the possibility of breast removal, says “It is even harder for women who do not definitely have the genes, but who have a family history, to know whether they fall into the 85% risk group or share the 10% risk of most women”.

Could it be possible that these women who think they may have a genetic history of breast cancer are unaware that they could actually just have a history of abortion in the family that they have not been told about?

Could this be the reason why in 2005 forty thousand women a year, but now in 2014 fifty five thousand women a year, are contracting breast cancer at ever younger ages?

Kylie Minogue was diagnosed in 2005 as having breast cancer at age 36.  Whilst we are not saying she has had an abortion, this should not be ruled out as a cause of breast cancer if she has had one (or more)to enable her to continue with her very successful career.  Many women, to prolong their career, may have had what is called ‘a safe abortion’ without being told that this could increase their chances of contracting breast cancer in the future, especially if it was their first pregnancy.

There are many studies that have been carried out over the last fifty or so years.  Is it not time for anyone seeking an abortion to be told about these studies so that they can make a fully informed decision?  Who is trying to hide what by continuing to supress this information, and why?
